Safe and Secure?

If you've jumped around this site maybe you missed it.... but here it is again. There is nothing safe about the DR. There is nothing safe about New Cambium. A collection of wealthy first world people makes for a great target in a third world country.

Every evening before dark we witnessed a young man ride in on a motorcycle wearing a nylon jacket with 'SECURITY' emblazened across his back and carrying a shotgun. He would park his bike and wander off into the woods towards the main road, we assume to take up some sort of strategic position to watch for intruders. It wasn't even dark so we don't know the point really. But we did have to question the 'training' this young man had. Based on everything else we were exposed to, we'll go with zero so his presence really didn't add to our feeling of being safe.

Again, through talking to people, we learned there has been some serious crime at New Cambium. One resident lived in Paw Paw, a very remote section of New Cambium and he was the victim of a home invasion in the night. 2 men, likely from the nearby village, broke in while he slept. Following that incident, the resident sold that home and moved to another near the communal pool. Current home is in Palm Gardens with a beautiful set of iron bars on all the windows and doors to look through because you generally can't close the windows at night... it gets too hot inside. Who doesn't love that prison feel anyway? The rentals, do not have much for security... sleep well. We should mention the patrols performed at night by 'Security'... they ride around the property on a motorcycle with no exhaust, right past your window which also contributes to a poor night sleep. But you'll feel safer because the criminals can't hear them coming either I guess.

Both of our rentals were equipped with hand held air horns. We never checked the condition nor were we instructed as to their actual purpose but we're pretty sure they are for calling for help because theres nobody nearby to help you. Either that or blowing the intruder's eardrums out (and yours with it) is going to stop someone from stabbing you or worse.
